Rhodiola rosea Supplements and Parkinson’s disease

Rhodiola rosea is known to have many benefits for brain health and longevity.

Rhodiola is a plant found in cold regions in Asia and Europa. It has been used for thousands of years as an “adaptogen”, meaning it can help to support the brain and body to deal with stressing circumstances.

Rhodiola has been found to improve cognition, resilience and reduce fatigue.

Rhodiola also extends lifespan in multiple species, including yeast (R), Caenorhabditis elegans worms (R), and fruit flies (R, RRR).

Rhodiola rosea can improve lifespan and brain health via different mechanisms.

1. Rhodiola induces protective proteins

Rhiodola can induce the production of protective proteins in cells, such as chaperone proteins (R), SIRT1, and AMPK (R).

Chaperones are molecules that gently stick to proteins, protecting them so the clump less together (protein clumping plays an important role in Parkinson's disease).

SIRT1 and AMPK play important roles in improving metabolism and protecting mitochondria (learn more about the role of mitochondria in Parkinson's disease here). These proteins also play roles in longevity.

2. Rhodiola activates autophagy

Rhodiola can also induce autophagy. This is the process that breaks down cell materials, such as protein aggregates and old or damaged mitochondria.

Autophagy declines during aging.

Also, reduced autophagy plays an important role in various neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

3. Rhodiola has neuroregenerative effects

Rhodiola contains very interesting substances, namely salidroside and rosavin. These molecules can induce neuroregeneration (R,R).

This is remarkable, because often damaged or severed nerves do not heal properly.

4. Rhodiola has neuroprotective effects

Rhodiola can also protect brain cells against damage. For example, it can protect and regenerate neurons in rats that are exposed to a strong neurotoxin (R,R).

In general, these findings help to explain why Rhodiola can improve brain health, stamina and endurance in people (R,R).
